The Workouts:

X2 Core
The core is your body's foundation: the point where all movement begins. By working your core using instability, you force your body to fire both its prime mover and stabilizer muscles in harmony. As you master this routine, all of your movement patterns will improve.

Plyocide
Combines traditional explosive movements with mind and coordination drills to increase not only your speed and endurance, but your entire mind/body connection, as well. Don't do this one more than once per week.

X2 Recovery + Mobility
You learned with P90X that your body only grows stronger while at rest after it has been challenged. The P90X2 Recovery + Mobility workout takes this a step further by not only enhancing recovery, but also forcing your body to realign to promote better overall functionality. The key is a myofascial release technique called foam rolling. Expect to get a whole new understanding of the phrase, "hurts so good." 5Very different from the original

I recently completed a round of P90x2, and I love it. I actually like this a lot more than the original version. Since most people who are considering this have already been exposed to P90x, I will highlight some of the differences for you.

1) Like P90x, it is a three phase program. The big key for me in X2 is there is more variety. For example, in P90x aside from the recovery week you did the same legs and back workout every week. In x2, the only program you do more than one month is the plyometrics workout. That is in phases I and II, but not in III. There is a recovery and mobility DVD that you can also use on your rest days.

2) X2 yoga is much better. It takes all the good stuff from the original p90x yoga, but compresses it into 61 min as opposed to 90 minutes. It flows much better, and I never found myself getting bored or wishing it would stop.

3) Foam rolling is awesome. In P90x you had a stretching DVD that you could use on your rest day. Here, there is a recovery and mobility DVD, the bulk of which is foam rolling. It is hard if you have never done it before, but if you stick with it, it will make your body feel so much better. The rest of recovery and mobility is stretching and low impact movements.

4) There is less cardio in X2. X1 had the karate workout, plyometrics and an optional cardio DVD. The only traditional cardio workout in X2 is plyometrics, and it is very different than the X1 version. The circuits in the regular workouts however kept my heart rate up so I still burned a lot of calories. And, in phase III you basically alternate two different workouts which do have quite a bit of cardio in them, and you do the 4 moves in the circuit back-to-back without stopping, then repeat the circuit 4 times. While it does not get your heart rate up like Insanity does, it does make you winded.

5) They focus a lot on the modifier in X2. They really set the workout up so you do not need all the equipment for people who are not ready to be balancing on medicine balls and stability balls, or travel and cannot take all the equipment with them.

6) While some of the workouts are similar to what you saw in X1, they are more challenging. There are still lots of pull ups and push ups, but push ups on medicine balls or stability balls are much different than they are on the floor. Even if you have done several rounds of P90x, there will be somewhat of a learning curve in X2.

Obviously the best workout for you is the one you can stick with. I like rotating the beachbody workouts because, lets face it, the same workout over and over gets boring, and even when split into phases your body will begin to adapt. The price on Amazon is pretty steep (you can find it for a lot less), and you always have to watch out for bootlegged copies from third party sellers. There is always some subjectivity in what you are going to like or dislike. For people who are fans of the original, I think X2 definitely will have something to offer.

I've really enjoyed the P90X2. I never tried P90X and was a bit worried about starting out on 2. It has done wonders for me. It is nice just using the videos and not have an instructor breathing down your neck making you work out.

3P90X2 vs P90X

I won't break down the DVDs for either P90X or P90X2, and I don't care who you are, P90X has something to offer. Any routine has something to offer, whatever you put IN to it. For me P90X introduced the concepts of plyometrics, set breaks and yoga. Tony is initially entertaining but he does get old after a while, especially when you can recite along word for word, but hey, that's the reason they have the Music & Cues option for audio. So now we have P90X TWO. I got it, and I must say, I'm still not sure I heart it as much as the original. Tony seems more serious this time, maybe because of all the online complaints that he was a cheeseball? There are some new concepts Post-Activation-Potentiation, foam rolling for recovery, and no more regimented phases, you break when YOU want to. Do I like the new concepts, meh...can I maybe gain something from? Surely. I even think the production value is down from last time, I'm not sure though. Maybe it's just me being resistant to change. I really liked the P90X layout, but maybe in order to avoid stagnation and what not, its time to evolve the system. Cuz with change, comes progress.
